A Djembe is a large goblet shaped skin-covered hand drum and is played with bare hands, rather than sticks. The origin and the meaning of the word 'Djembe' is not clear.
According to one version, Djembe's origin can be traced to Mali in West Africa and if the saying in their local language is translated into English, it literally means 'everyone gather together'. Other research scholars deduce that the name originates from the 'Djem' tree (Sycamore fig), which was widely used in the shell in those days.
Djembe belongs to membranophone family of musical instruments, comprising a frame and shell; in respect of Djembe, it is wooden shell. Drum-head is usually made of rawhide. While Djembe is normally about 12 inches in diameter and 24 inches in height, smaller sizes are also available.
